Carnival – a festival full of colours, joy and community!
Carnival, also known as Fasching, is a festival that is celebrated in many different forms around the world. What originally started as a way to get in the mood for Lent has developed into a symbol of joie de vivre, creativity and cultural diversity. From impressive parades to imaginative costumes, Carnival brings people together and provides a stage for the art of dressing up and expressing joie de vivre.
Clean Monday – The Beginning of Lent in the Orthodox Tradition
Today marks "Clean Monday" ( Καθαρά Δευτέρα ), the beginning of Lent in the Greek Orthodox Church. This day symbolizes purity and a new beginning - both spiritually and physically. During Lent, people traditionally abstain from meat, eggs and dairy products in order to consciously prepare for the period leading up to Easter.
The day before, however, there was another big celebration! Carnival parades all over Greece were a spectacular sight: walking groups in imaginative costumes, elaborately designed floats and creative mottos characterized the colorful hustle and bustle. It was a happy, cultural festival that brought the streets to life.
